Material

Below is the location and some previous data on the main stratigraphic sections to be studied, all of them belonging to the Subbétic Domain of the Betic Cordillera. The criteria applied for their selection were the availability of previous data ensuring that the record of each one of the EECs of the lower Barremian – Aptian interval is recorded in good conditions for study in at least two of them 

La Frontera sections

The research group has carried out previous studies on the biostratigraphy of ammonites, planktonic foraminifera, calcareous nannofossils and radiolaria (Aguado et al., 1988; 1992; 2014c). Partial studies have also been carried out on paleoceanographic aspects, medium-low resolution C and O isotopes and biomarkers (Aguado et al., 2014b; de Gea et al., 2008a). In these sections has been detected the record of the MBE, TE and OAE 1a.

Cortijo del Hielo section

The team has carried out medium-resolution studies on biostratigraphy of ammonites and calcareous nanofossils (Aguado et al., 1997). Preliminary data on C isotopes, together with biostratigraphy indicate the TE record.

Bco. de las Azadillas section

Preliminary biostratigraphic data on ammonite and calcareous nanofossils indicate the record of MBE with the presence of organic matter-rich beds.

Carbonero section

The research group has carried out previous studies on radiolaria and nanofossil biostratigraphy (Aguado et al., 1993; Aguado,1994; O'Dogherty, 1994; Castro et al., 2019), stratigraphy and sedimentology (de Gea, 2008b), C isotopes, biomarkers and trace elements (de Gea, 20008a; Castro et al., 2019). These studies show that the initial phase of OAE 1a and the immediately preceding interval are recorded in a well-exposed, expanded stratigraphic succession.

Arroyo Gilico section

Previous biostratigraphic studies on ammonites, and biostratigraphic and paleoceanographic calcareous nannofossil research has been developed in this section by the team (Aguado et al., 2014a). This section has been calibrated using astrochronology (Martinez et al., 2020) and records the MBE.

Bco. de Cavila 2 section

There are previous data on biostratigraphy of ammonites and nanofossils. Previous data on medium-low resolution C and O isotopes indicate the TE record (Martinez et al., 2020). This section has been calibrated using astrochronology (Martinez et al., 2020).

Río Argos 6 section

Previous ammonite biostratigraphic data, together with lithostratigraphy, suggest the record in this section of an early phase of dysoxic/anoxic conditions probably linked to the TE.
